O hábito de trocar ovos de chocolate surgiu na França. Antes disso, eram usados ovos de galinha para celebrar a data.<br />

A tradição de presentear com ovos – de verdade mesmo – é muito, muito antiga. Na Ucrânia, por exemplo, centenas de anos antes de era cristã já se trocavam ovos pintados com motivos de natureza – lá eles têm até nome, pêssanka – em celebração à chegada da primavera.<br />

Os chineses e os povos do Mediterrâneo também tinham como hábito dar ovos uns aos outros para comemorar a estação do ano. Para deixá-los coloridos, cozinhavam-nos com beterrabas.<br />

Os cristãos se apropriaram da imagem do ovo para festejar a Páscoa, que celebra a ressurreição de Jesus – o Concílio de Nicéia, realizado em 325, estabeleceu o culto à data. Na época, pintavam os ovos (geralmente de galinha, gansa ou codorna) com imagens de figuras religiosas, como o próprio Jesus e sua mãe, Maria.<br />

Na Inglaterra do século X, os ovos ficaram ainda mais sofisticados. O rei Eduardo I (900-924) costumava presentear a realeza e seus súditos com ovos banhados em ouro ou decorados com pedras preciosas na Páscoa. Não é difícil imaginar por que esse hábito não teve muito futuro.<br />

A figura do coelho está simbolicamente relacionada à esta data comemorativa, pois este animal representa a fertilidade. O coelho se reproduz rapidamente e em grandes quantidades. Entre os povos da antiguidade, a fertilidade era sinônimo de preservação da espécie e melhores condições de vida, numa época onde o índice de mortalidade era altíssimo. No Egito Antigo, por exemplo, o coelho representava o nascimento e a esperança de novas vidas.<br />
